HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Corporate World: A Curtain Raiser Series-3
On 20th August 2020, the Department of Human Resource Management organized a Guest Session on “Understanding HR Practices:
Then and Now” by Mr. Ramesh Nair, Ex-Executive Director (HR), BPLC and Advisor HR/IR. Mr. Nair highlighted that over past 10 years a lot of specializations like compensation and benefit expert, talent acquisition and competency, learning and development, etc. have come up in the HR field. There is a shift from Industrial Relations to Employee Relations which emphasize more on Employee Engagements.
Major takeaways from the session were:
- Concept of permanent employees will disappear in near future and there will be need for Gig workers.
- Therefore, constant upskilling is required. Innovative ideas will be the new currency. Developing Entrepreneurial skill (be your own employee).
- Contactless, virtual working will become the norm (world moving from globalization to localization).
- Opportunity is in health; viral research is exploring.
- The recruitment scenario has changed over a period becoming more digitized, employee centric and focused on talent retention.
- Machine Learning has increased, and employees should be able to work collaboratively with machines.
- Various Leadership qualities in HR should be enhanced such as focus on strengths rather on weakness, high empathy- EQ factor, good functional knowledge, teamwork, visionary approach, etc.
Mr. Nair concluded the session with a quote- “You must stay alive to whatever is happening around, stay reluctant and stay contextual.”
